Keneson Road
Keneson Road is a street of Riverhurst, the riverside colony west of Concord Road in South Billerica. It first appears on the "Plan of Riverhurst, Billerica, Mass.," drawn in January 1921 by Whitman and Howard, civil engineers of Boston, for Fred B., A. Mabel and Claude B. Bartlett of Bedford, who had bought the 40 acre Riverhurst tract in 1915 (Plan Book 38, Plan 85). On that plan Keneson Road is a short connecting street running south from Riverhurst Road to Bartlett Road, beside a right of way and a large lot marked "sold." Houses on it are dated by the assessors from about 1920.
The origin of the name has not been found. It is spelled "Keneson" on the plan; the town's water report of 1959 spells it "Keneston." No Keneson appears in the town records or genealogies consulted, and the name may have been that of a person connected with the Bartletts or with the Boston realty men who sold the lots, but no record says so.
Water mains were extended along "Keneston Road" in 1959. When the Riverhurst section of Bartlett Road was renamed, about 1990, the pieces of Bartlett Road west of Keneson Road toward Spring Lane (now Rizzo Lane) were joined to Keneson Road, so that the street now runs from Riverhurst Road west through the middle of the colony; an "Easement Plan in Billerica, Mass., Keneson Road" was drawn in April 1999 for a utility easement to a lot on the former Spring Lane. Keneson Road is a private way; no vote accepting it has been found, and it is not among the roads of the 1831 town map accepted by town meeting in October 2016.
